‘Build the Home, Grow the Community’ project was born, post-tsunami, from collaborations amongst several in-field organizations who agreed that solutions must be found with a long-term, sustainable vision; where the community can ‘grow’ rather than be at the receiving end of help lines.
This blog is the project as seen from the eyes of architects from CASE (Community Architects for Shelter and Environment), who have spent over a year on Koh Mook in Trang, Thailand working with fisher folk communities on the island to find a sustainable solution to their problems.
The participatory nature of the project opened up spaces for community members to exchange ideas, learn from each other and make mistakes together. Their way of lives formed a basis on which trust was built, on how their communities co-existed on the island; and it is on this foundation that the project was built upon.
